Ontario man to ride on Rose Parade float

ONTARIO - A local man will ride on a Rose Parade float in January that is intended to raise awareness of the importance of organ, tissue and blood donors. Dan Sandoval, of Ontario, has donated blood regularly for the past five years, since first doing so for a godson who was diagnosed with leukemia. Sandoval will appear on the Donate Life float alongside 22 other donors and donor family members whose donations have saved lives. "It is an incredible feeling knowing that such a simple act as donating a pint of blood may save a life," he said. The 2007 Tournament of Roses will be Jan. 1 in Pasadena. The theme of the parade is "Our Good Nature." http://www.dailybulletin.com/news/ci_4443184

Ontario event raises funds for Special Olympics

ONTARIO - The rules were simple. The task was not. Pull a cargo plane. By hand. Eleven teams of 20 put their muscle to the test Saturday on Ontario International Airport's inaugural Plane Pull, a fundraising event to benefit the Special Olympics of Southern California. "I'm so glad to be here for the first of what we hope will be many plane pulls," Ontario Councilwoman Sheila Mautz said. Participating teams raised at least $1,000 each for the privilege of trying to pull a Boeing 727 (weight: 155,000 pounds) for 25 feet on the airport tarmac. Teams were distributed gloves and positioned along a thick nylon rope tied to landing gear on the plane's nose. Then, they pulled.
