The Scariest Place In Alta Loma

The scariest and most haunted house in Alta Loma is just north of Hillside, east of Hermosa Ave. in an area known as 'The Woods' of Alta Loma, only a few streets from the base of the mountain.  This haunted house story is more interesting than your average 'haunted house' story because it's not about some 100 year old home or winery, it's about a fairly new home built in 1989 and everything is verifiable.  These things all happened in the mid to late 1990's and any of the neighbors can confirm the details and the incident was actually reported in the Daily Bulletin newspaper.

The house is on a 1/2 acre horse property with over 150 eucalyptus trees.  Several people have commented that it looks like something out of the movie 'Blair Witch Project' and say it is scary looking at night even if nothing happened there.  The house itself is tutor style and small for the area at only about 2200 sq. feet and 3 bedrooms.  All the other houses in the area are much larger.

The original owner was a contractor and built the home himself, literally with his own hands as a gift to the love of his life whom he had just married a few years before.  They lived happily for a few years and had twin girls that went to Vineyard Jr High down the street at Hermosa and Highland Ave.

The story goes that after being served divorce papers the man grew severely depressed.  When the soon to be ex-wife demanded that he move out of the home that he not only owned, but built himself, he swore on his life that he would never leave.  The next day he waited for his wife and twin daughters to leave for school & work, got his shotgun, went to his favorite sitting area beneath one of the larger eucalyptus trees, put the barrel in his mouth, his toe on the trigger, and blew the better part of his head off.

Upon returning home from school that afternoon the girls became concerned that the back door was open, the TV was on, etc, and went searching for their father.  One girl searched the front of the property, the other, the back of the property.  When the girl found her father's mostly decapitated body in the back yard she began screaming so uncontrollably that the neighbors called the police thinking a crime was occurring.  The girl was so traumatized by finding her father this way that a few weeks later she also killed herself in the house by slitting her wrists in the bathtub.  The mother and other daughter sold the home and moved out shortly after.  The house has had several owners since - not one of them staying any longer than about a year because of the strange happenings inside and outside the home.

Neighbors and locals walking the horse-trail behind the home report seeing the figure of the husband wondering aimlessly at night thru the trees.   You can also hear the screaming of the daughter as the wind blows through the trees at night.  People that have lived in the house have told neighbors that they also hear the screams of the teenage girl and sometimes hear the words "daddy" being whispered when it's quite in the house. When it's windy they also report seeing a shadow figure move through the trees at night.

If you are ever walking through the horse trails above Hillside Avenue and east of Hermosa, look for the yard with a lot of trees and the smallest house in the area.  If you want to see or hear the ghosts, go back at night and you can hear the screams of the girl and might see the father or his shadow wandering the property that he swore he would never leave.

I agree with you 100%,there is something eerie in the whole area cause I felt the same way when I was in that area,I was not at that house we were trying to find the house and ended up at a totally different one but let me tell you if the walls could talk they would be screaming, cause in my opinion there is diffentely something going on strange in the woods cause you can feel it in the air..

I grew up just in the general location, our house was so haunted my parents called in Greek Orthodox priests. We didn't sleep much as kids. And it had long term effects, it still angers me to this day the psychological torture that ghost put on me and my siblings at such a young age.

What street did you live on?

Ya I believe her cause I did the same thing got the shit scared out of us and heard all these screams but all in all we allways go back to see if we really heard the screams and maybe we will find out if we was really at the right house.

these people are idiots, no report of a murder even exists here and they keep coming up here, littering and causing dogs to bark early in the morning and I'm a resident here and tired of it. GET A LIFE people! There's no ghosts here and the story is just a story. Go ahead try to find supporting evidence of this "murder" because strangely it doesnt exist on the world wide web...hmmm..idiots.

definately something strange going on here, I went alone and when I reached the wooded location it became very quiet and still. Felt I was being watched, when I turned to leave I suddenly became very cold although it was quite warm and a little humid outside. I could here shuffling and got the hell out of there. I'll go back but not alone again. I honestly wasnt expecting a thing and havent experienced paranormal activity since I was a child. It brought that old fear back, something is strange in this area thats for sure.

Well I'm glad I'm not alone in my thoughts that something very eerie is up in those hills. As I stated before, the whole area is haunted as far as I'm concerned. & I don't EVER want to lock my damn keys in the car again, alone or not!

where exactly was it? i tried to go look today but there were 2 houses that were smaller and we on different sides. one was on the southwest and the other on the northwest..please let me know. i would really like to go see it.

Okay I actually think ur thinking of another house because the one on the corner of hillside and hermosa does have alot of tress also there is no one living in that house, I dnt know what house ur talking about and also dont have any clue to anyone that is in a wheelchair are that even lives in that area also could you tell me where the house is located in the story? Is that story made up or is it a true story?

ok, well i'll give you the tree thing because i havn't actually driven by the house on Hillside in several weeks, and when i last did, i wasnt really paying attention to the trees - but i DO know that the corner of Hillside and Hermosa is not considered "The Woods", as menitoned in the story. Most of those houses a few blocks above Hillside in "the woods" have trees counted in the hundreds.

I used to drive by that house on the corner every day, a few years back. Back when the guy was still building the house. I would see him, almost daily, in a wheelchair. And when I didnt see him, i would see his wheelchair parked at the bottom of the stairs of the house behind the newer house. I'm pretty sure there was a story in the paper not too long about about him because he was buidling the house from his wheelchair.

The original story says the guy that built his house in the '80s or 90's, way before the guy (in the wheelchair) started work on his house. I dont know if the story is true or not, but i've heard about it because I live nearby and other that I know (and people that have posted here at this website) have also heard about it, so there must be at least some truth. i don't know where the house in the story is, but based on what is in the story, it has to be up closer to the mountain, at least a few more blocks north of Hillside. All those houses, off of Hermosa, within a few blocks of the mountain are considiered "the woods" and have all those Eucalyptis trees - so it's somewhere up there. I agree with what someone else posted, that it has to be up around Snowbird or Whispering Forest which is on the East side of Hermosa. I live less than a mile away so now i'm so curious i'll have to go hunting for it!
