Local myths of Fontana that are quite real....

We often hear rumors about who or what might have lived, or died or has family in an area.. Below are some figures, some most noticeable and others not so notorious that once had something to do with the city of Fontana.

Gangster Al Capone once had a home in Fontana, which was notable for the initial "C" displayed on one of the home's chimneys. It was rumored that Capone had secret passageways or tunnels built under the house that led out into the back yard making for a quick escape in case his place was ever surrounded by the fuzz. No tunnels were ever found though after the home was torn down. And we all know what happened to Al after he left Fontana.

The Crlenica Brothers, a local Slavic "Tamburitza" musical group, lived in Fontana, had a music store on Arrow Blvd., and played music locally for Fontana's large Slavic population. Unbeknownst to most Fontana residents, they also did some movie work in Hollywood, performing on the soundtrack of "Dr. Zhivago", and also in the movie "Patton," near the end of the movie in the Russian dance scene.

Shelton Brooks, legendary songwriter and bandleader of the early 20th century, spent several decades in his later years living in Fontana. The writer of such hits as "Darktown Strutters’ Ball" and "Some of These Days," he would buy a new Cadillac every year with his songwriter royalties.. As a leader of his own successful big band, he hobnobbed with the Hollywood elite and became especially close to torch singer Sophie Tucker, known as The Last of the Red Hot Mammas.
Whitman Mayo, the actor who played Shady Grady in the TV series "Sanford and Son," moved with his family from New York City to Fontana in 1967, when he was 37. While living in Fontana he attended Chaffey College in nearby Cucamonga.. He once served as the Grand Marshall in the Fontana Days parade.

Legendary motorcycle builder Denver Mullins was from Fontana.. He started a bike shop, Denver’s Choppers, in San Bernardino in 1967, where he was the first to toy in the building of custom bikes and replacement bike parts. The shop later moved to Henderson, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas, where it still operates to this day. Denver died in a racing boat accident in 1992.

Henry Kaiser’s steel mill in Fontana was the only steel mill west of the Mississippi River.. During WWII Kaiser shipbuilding contributed hundreds of naval and merchant vessels.. The steel mill scene in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movie "Terminator 2" was filmed in the abandoned Kaiser Steel Mill. Robo Cop was also filmed at the old steel mill as well as many sci-fi and police movies.

What ever happened to Ro-Val’s automobile museum, located on Foothill Blvd on the western outskirts between Fontana and Cucamonga? It was for a while the home for many classic automobiles of the 20’s and 30’s, including a huge vehicle once owned by screen actor Fatty Arbuckle. When the Ro-Val museum closed, the vehicles were sold to Bill Harrah, a Nevada casino owner and automobile collector, who placed them on display in the museum located at his casino.

In the 1950’s and 60’s Fontana was home to a famous drag racing strip that was a significant venue in the NHRA circuit. Known officially as Mickey Thompson’s Fontana International Dragway, it was also referred to as Fontana Drag City or just plain old Fontana Drag Strip. The original Fontana strip closed after several serous accidents and deaths to the drivers ad the NHRA deemed the track to short and narrow for safe racing.

Hey, old school Fontana right here whats up! Im the one who posted about having been in the rumpus room at the Capone house! When we were in HS a friends Grandmother told us about a man who went insane and burned himself and family alive in this house. Im not sure how we found it but we used to go party there in the burned down pad and explore down in the basement in the mid-late 90's. Back then it was cool and creepy but I never had any experience there until a few yrs later and I was sober and I tell you IT IS WAY HAUNTED! My ex and I and a girl went there one night and on the way up the dirt road we had blue lightning type illuminations appear in the car before we even got up to the house. Once there for a while we could hear faint wailing and then tapping sounds all over the car and on our scared way out the lightning happened again while I was driving and it lit up the floor of the car. The thing that happened to us I cannot explain but at least I am not the only one who had those experiences! The story is long but to sum it up, who or whatever it was followed us all the way back home just to scare us! I have not been there since about '01. The house was just along the 15 n. of hunters ridge. Around that time they were starting to build new home tracks there. The house was off of a dirt road along a row of tall eucalyptus trees and there are a few large ranch style houses on the right side of the dirt road we used to take to get there but Im not sure if it is a street yet or not. The house might not even be there anymore but if there are new homes on that land now, I am sure they are having paranormal experiences like we did.
Next time Im in the area I will swing by there to see and I will update you on the status. Im getting the chills just remembering all that stuff now...

Fontana is the armpit smoghole of California. Remember there is no such thing as ghosts.. The fallen angels {demons} are real 1/3 of the angels fell from heaven with satan .. The dead are dead.. But evil spirits {demons the fallen} can impersonate anyone they choose to the the ignorant believers of ghosts.

You're an armpit smoghole! You obviously don't belong on this page so go back to where you started and go preach to someone who wants to hear your bs...tootle-loo!

I think he belongs on this page just as much as you do. But he did make one mistake about Fontana.. He spelled "smoghole" wrong. It's actually spelled S H I T H O L E .. and, what makes Fontana that way is not where it is, the business, or the few fine people that live there. What makes Fontana a shithole are the shithole people (and their shitty children) that live there. So, if you don't like the reality of what Fontana has become, talk to your neighbor about it. But chances are your neighbor will be too busy stealing cars, starting fights, or spray painting a freeway overpass to care..

Now before you go spouting off about how not everyone in Fontana is a a shitbag, re-read what I just wrote....

...See there? I said there are a few fine people that live in Fontana.. But, the MAJORITY or TOO MANY are just worthless wastes of otherwise good human skin.. and it is those people that are giving Fontana a bad name.. again.. If you don't like this reality, go talk to them.

Exactly! I've lived here my whole life (26 years) and I don't remember Fontana being THIS bad when I was growing up. I agree with EVERYTHING you posted.

How long have you been in Fontana? No one is stopping you from packing up your shithole and moving your asshole some where else.

Ok lets break down your worthless utterance of a statement filled with nothing but worthless statements.

First your stated three points on the character of the citizens of this city.
"busy stealing cars, starting fights, or spray painting a freeway overpass"

Ok your first point is stealing cars if we look at the article found at (http://www.dailybulletin.com/ci_23803746/fontana-ranked-15th-safest-city-nation) "This city has been ranked as the 15th safest in America, according to Business Insider, an Internet-only publication that used the FBI's preliminary 2012 unified crime report data for 2012 to compile city rankings."
Oh what do you know Fontana is actually pretty safe in that area not to mention the police department when compared to other departments across California is one of the top departments state wide. the same article states Fontana is 4th safest in the state of California.
So much for being busy stealing cars huh...

Now onto your second point, starting fights.
When was the last you heard of a riot in fontana California...oh thats right there has not been any. You overgeneralized "the MAJORITY" if this were true my friend for a city's majority to hold this attitude a riot would logically ensue. Aside from this Fontana has not been known to be the epicenter of any political outrage, the statistics being 4th safest in the state would surely not have this ranking if its majority of people were constantly picking fights.

Your third point spray painting a freeway overpass, Fontana has not been known to have a problem with tagging on freeway overpasses or anywhere to be honest. If you take the time to drive throughout all fontana it is a pretty spray paint free city.

You also mentioned "the shithole people (and their shitty children)" Well lets break this down too shall we. Shithole people hmm for a city that is pretty clean has top rated police department and isnt on constant riot alert. Well seems like a pretty normal city and if being a part of a community that holds these qualities makes people shitholes then i would see your point but I do not. You want to know shithole people go join a bigot filled organization that preys on people for their own pleasure once you spend a week with real shitholes let me know what you think of the fontana residents then ok. You also made a point of "shitty children" I wish to implore on this, what exactly makes them shitty? You said children so this must mean you are speaking of the age range between 5-12 or 1-12(if you include toddlers)age range at this pointmost children havent even formed a full sense of identity most of these children have no idea what they are doing, so I have no idea how they can be shitty if children are for the most part unaware of their own behavior and regulation of said behavior is a process over time into adulthood. It seems to place a label of shitty on children or any child makes you quite a "shitty" person yourself, and the fact that you would say "the MAJORITY or TOO MANY or just worthless wastes of otherwise good human skin" makes you a person of little critical thought who overgeneralizes a whole population.

in other words to put it simply for your obviously underdeveloped mind, your points have been proven wrong. They are worthless wastes of the english vocabulary. In other cases people are entitled to their opinions but when you claim them to be facts and use childish methods to put down people...well I'm sorry to tell you that in this case there is a right and wrong and facts are facts just happened to be that your facts are not the right one YOU STUPID BITCH CUNT FUCK!

That last phrase was my attempt to use vocabulary you may be more familiar with. I apologize for any hard feelings that may have arisen.

Have a nice day and don't forget to smile.

You're exactly the reason I dont live in fontana

Never knew a person on the internet you've never met before could prevent you from living in a city that seems to have a pretty well off population. I don't know if I should be glad someone like you doesnt live in Fontana or sad that you wouldn't even be open minded to the idea that Fontana may not be a shithole after all. Different strokes for different folks i suppose, but honestly maybe you should be a little less critical of a place you've never even inhabited before. Now I am not saying Fontana is perfect, of course every city has its faults but Fontana has proven its no shithole.

you said I'm the exact reason you dont live in fontana, may I ask why that is?

I am not physically, financially, psychologically, or in any other sense stopping you, by all means go to fontana and give it an honest chance. Is it because you didn't like my Argument? It was researched and I provided proof countering statements said before using statistical evidence and slang so as to appropriate my self to the level of "shithole" slang used. If you can provide a counter argument I will without hesitation read it without bias and if you can prove me wrong by all means do.
I'm also not forcing you to love fontana either I saw points made that were untrue I would have done the same for any other city.

In review of what I just said if I am not forcing you to love fontana or somehow stopping you from living there I can't see why I am a reason why you dont live there...just gave some facts about a city and went down to the same level as far as insults went, after all I didn't throw the first punch.

Have a nice day.

It's really not as bad as it used to be. I've been there 10 years and it cleaned up so much that the police are getting bored. I know quite a few people that live in that city and they are all going about their lives just fine.
