Latin Jazz at the Alley Kat Jazz Lounge in Rialto

Jazz in the IE! Having lived in the Inland Empire for about six years I've seen many changes. One of the recent changes has been the introduction of jazz on a regular basis with a couple of new clubs dedicated to this great music. I know many people in the IE over the years who lament having to drive to the OC or LA to get their fix for jazz and particularly Latin Jazz. Well now they have two new venues that seem to be catching on, the Hip Kitty Jazz and Fondue Lounge in Claremont Village and the Alley Kat Jazz Lounge in Rialto. The Alley Kat just opened this past month and is also going to be featuring a local Latin Jazz band that has played at the Hip Kitty. The group is called MAMBOP. They've had great audience reaction playing at many of Claremont's summer street fairs, Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga and at the Hip Kitty. Now they're bringing their blend of Latin Jazz and classic Salsa to the Alley Kat in Rialto. If you like our local southland's Grammy winning Latin Jazz star Poncho Sanchez's music you'll love Mambop's music. They'll be brining Poncho's music, some Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri and their own arrangements of some classic jazz tunes. Hopefully all those folks who previously would drive to LA and the OC will support Jazz and Latin Jazz in the IE. Who knows one of these days people in LA and the OC might start driving to the IE for their Jazz fix!

The Acapulco Inn in the Moreno Valley.

I must thank IE-Dude for reminding me of this excellent Restaurant located in what used to be turn 9 of the Riverside International Raceway. They had just finished building the new Riverside Records office when the Acapulco opened its doors to the public.

And being so different than the traditional fare of Mexican food places found in the Moreno Valley, the Acapulco was an immediate hit.

They are also fashioned after another restaurant, 'On the Border' being owned by the same group, there foods are similar, but yet they offer different specialties. The Shrimp scampi served with a green chili Verde sauce is excellent, and the Lobster and Abalone Bisque is equally some of the best Mexican sea food I have ever eaten.

A friend of mine who was out at the court house recently stopped by and had one of their new signature dishes, the salmon grilled to perfection and served with sherry butter souse, also includes a shrimp barque served on a bed of Mexican rice and a crab Enchilada. A bit pricey at over $17.00 it was magnificent and Bob is hard to please. On our next trip out there I plan on trying this item.

another favorite of mine is the Carne Asada Steak dinner, chilled overnight in a lime juice with chives, onions and tamillitos, served over Mexican rice, pilled high with green onions and bell peppers or Ortega chili's if you prefer....HuummmHummm. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

They also have a full bar and are set up like your typical sports bar with enough large screen TV's to keep you entertained. They also do catering and have rooms set aside for large parties. You must make reservations for these occasions. Otherwise, the dress is casual and walk in with some waiting on the weeknights.

In Moreno Valley they are located at 12625 Frederick Street and there phone number is 951-653-8809. Take a right and go south from the 60 freeway. Again they are located in what used to be the old racetrack and just down the street from the new civic center of Moreno Valley.

I have also the occasion to visit their Montclair location. It is at 9405 Monte Vista Ave. which is on the south lot of the Montclair Plaza next to the movie theaters. If you get off at Monte Vista Make two right sharp turns into the parking area. In case you get lost and need to contact them call 909-621-3955

No longer just a Bikers hangout, 'Chads' in Big Bear Valley has once again become what it was always meant to be

A late night bar and grill with local bands jammin into the wee hours of the morn.

'Chad’s' has survived the wars, earthquakes, and the ups and downs.

Rollin’ into the Village on a hot summer Saturday afternoon, you can park your Harley in one of the "bikes only" spots alongside all the other shiny hogs and join in the showoff brawdness, dancing, and serious pool playing going on inside Chad’s. Over a cold beer you can swap stories with tourists and locals alike about the world situation, the Lakers, or the drought in Big Bear. Chad’s today is truly an international gathering spot, at least by mountain standards.

But it wasn’t always this way. In fact, that was probably the furthest thing from the minds of Fred and Blanche Chadbourne as they arrived in the sleepy little town of Pineknot for their honeymoon in April of 1918. Coming up from the valley heat to the cool air of the upper forests, the newlyweds quicky fell in love with the area and decided they would open a café in "town," which back then was out in the middle of the forest by a man made dam, the area known today as the Village.

Fred was one of Big Bear’s first commuters. He owned a men’s store down in Redlands, and split his time between the two businesses until his permanent move to Big Bear in 1938. Back then it took almost 5 hours to make it to the area known as running Springs. Then highway 18 was a one lane affair hugging the side of the Mountians and the other road up (330) was full of logging and mining equipment. Add in another 3 hours to Bear Valley and you can see why he would only come up on weekends.

Known about town as a rough and gruff kind of guy, he was also said to have a heart of gold. Born in Maine in 1872, he moved to Redlands in 1909, and ran his store there for thirty years. After moving here full time, he lived only four more years, passing on in 1942.

As time went by, the Chadbourne’s added Chad’s Camp, an assortment of log cabins in the area today known as the Bartlett parking lot. The last of these were torn down in the 90’s when the villiage was rebuilt in todays tourist meca. Blanche sold the business in 1944 and spent the rest of her days here, until she died at the age of 76.

Chad’s café moved from its original location to just a few doors west and stands today in the heart of the Village that has grown up around it. Chad’s has survived the wars, earthquakes, and the ups and downs of Big Bear’s economic cycles plus a series of five ownership changes. Somewhere along the line it established the reputation of being haunted. Some said that Blanch was still searching for her lost long lost love Fred. A team of "investigators" came in with a truckload of equipment, including sound and video monitors and spent a few nights there. Sure enough, their findings detected a presence of something not of this world. That was probably the dead frogs in the back, it was never really made clear what they really suspected. Others said that the new owners paid for the results, we will most likely know.

Over the years, Chad’s the café and camp became Chad’s the bar and developed a reputation as a rowdy place in the late 60’s and 70’s. As owning and riding a motorcycle became more acceptable, so did hanging out at Chad’s. It wasn't an uncommon occurnace to see the local constable or the CHP paying a visit, it was that kind of place and the rowdiness would last into the wee hours of the night.

Today, under the new owners, you are as likely to find doctors and lawyers among the leather clad riders, you are Hell’s Angels. Old Fred and Blanche would be proud of their legacy - starting, owning, and operating what is one of the oldest businesses in Big Bear.

Since many of the well-known Big Bear events take place in the Village, Chad’s is the natural meeting place. Drink a beer and watch the Old Miner’s Day parade go by right in front of you. Drink another beer and watch the vintage car show. Drink several beers to celebrate Oktoberfest.

They especially get into holidays like Halloween and New Year’s Eve. At Halloween they build a haunted house outside and pass out candy to the kids. On that weekend come dressed up for a chance to win cash at the costume contest. New Years is slammed! This is the best place to be if you’re up here. Get your admission tickets early, they allways sell out for Halloween.

Chads host numerous motorcycle poker runs, pool and dart tournaments, and private parties. Don’t forget about the weekly musical entertainment. Call them for more info to see who is playing that night or weekened.

They also have several large screen TV's for those who just cant miss the local games and scores.

Chad's is located in the Villiage at 40740 Village Dr. in the center of Big Bear. If you want to call to bands, specials or reservations on the weekends, their number is 909-866-2161.

Late Night On the Border is at the border, Food wise that is, and....

will find you happy, well fed and ready for the next day as we like to say...

'On the Border' Cantina, sports bar and family restaurant is another of those themed restaurants that you want to return to as often as you can.

they are a nationwide chain and one of there establishments just happens to be right down the street from me on Foothill in the Target Center.

Open in 2002 'On the border' has been a favorite of the entire family ever since. There lunch specials which last from 11:am to 4:PM are priced for the person or persons on the fly and don't have time to sit in the sports bar and have to get back to work.

Night Time though, is catered for those who have the time to sit down, have a few drinks, enjoy a great meal and watch or cheer there favorite team on to victory from one of 12 large screen TV's.

And they have something for every one. I personally have had the triple dinner which consisted of two cheese enchiladas, and a chili Rejeno, black beans and rice, Corona and a to die for double fudge chocolate cake. Cost; about $12.00 per person.

another favorite of mine here is the chili Colorado, nice fat free chucks of pork cooked in a green chili salsa covered with cheeses, beans and rice and flour tortillas, with a ice cold corona or Miller genuine draft, it just hits the spot.

Another favorite of mine is the Carne Asada dinner. Nice pieces of steak picado soaked in lime juice, and cooked on a supper hot grill to lock in the flavors with sliced peppers and onions, three cheeses, black beans and rice as sides and if you like a bit of change, a tall glass of Ice Tea.

'On the Borders' is located at 10680 foothill blvd in Rancho and there phone number is 909-481-9150.

They also do catering and will make your dinner to go just in case you don't have the time to stay.

All I can tell you is that if you are with a large group, family or alone you wont feel alone 'On the Border'

Senor Agvae, a new Mexican Restaurant up and coming.....

with a past to over come....

For several years the residents here in the park and surrounding neighborhoods fought to get the established Restaurant in the strip mall closed or at least modified. I wont mention its name because it is a part of a well known restaurant chane. Needless to say after a year of fighting with the city and the restaurant, they couldn't meet the stringent standards of being a restaurant and they were forced out and to relocate to an area of the city that better suits a Cantina than a restaurant.

A new restaurant soon announced plans to move in with a full food menu and a full bar.

But because of the problems with the previous occupant, a liquor license was denied by the city. But as luck would prove out, I and most of the residents who had opposed the previous occupant signed on to the New restaurant after we were invited in to the new establishment to see that it was indeed a restaurant and I am happy we did. So far Senor Agave has proving itself a good neighbor and an excellent establishment to eat.

Senor Agave is an exciting restaurant that blends the radiant flavors and handcrafted care of traditional Mexican cuisine with a contemporary sophistication and polish of the Inland Empire. they feature an exciting tequila bar which boast fine Agave tequilas, a separate adobe colored dining room, and dynamic contemporary architecture, that blends in with the cities historical background.

The menu at Senor Agave features a wide array of great selections, made from only the freshest and highest quality ingredients, with something sure to please every member of your group. Senor Agave has established itself as one of the area's favorite culinary destinations and is sure to offer you a pleasant and unique dining experience every time you visit.

Most recently I enjoyed there Chili Rejeno dinner combination which consisted of a cheese enchilada with a deep flavored red sauce over Provolone and japena chesses. Excellent!

And previous to this weekends visit I dinned on what I think is perhaps the best Chili Colorado that will give other established named Mexican restaurants a run for there money. Served in a red chili sauce with refried beans (Black beans upon request) Mexican style loose rice, flour tortillas, and taco chips.

Another excellent dish and we left the feeling full, relaxed and with that warm feeling good food will give you.

We ate breakfast there once and I found that my favorite was on the menu. Chorizo. I asked if I could have potatoes added to the plate and they say no problem. For those of you who don't know what Chorizo is it is pork and beef meats mixed in chili's and onions and rolled like a sausage. It is cut up and fried with eggs, chili's and potatoes served with flour tortillas and coffee and tea. An excellent meal to start the day.

So!, if you want excellent food, served in a warm atmosphere, with people who know how to make you happy, you must visit Senor Agave, (Which Means Mr Worm) They have a full bar, a party room which can be reserved in advance, sports bar with plenty of TV's to keep track of the nights sporting events, and the dress is casual.

They have been open a little over a year now and there hours of operation are as follows;
Monday 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM, Tuesday 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM Wednesday 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM, Thursday 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM Friday 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM Saturday 08:00 AM - 11:00 PM and Sunday 08:00 AM - 10:00 PM.

Senor Agave's is located at 9950 Foothill blvd Suite R, Rancho Cucamonga 91730 and there phone number is 909-945-5146.

What did they do with the monkeys when they shut the Mission drive-in down?

Ah the good old days....work thru the week then take time on Friday Night to check the paper for what was playing at the local drive ins....We had plenty to choose from back then in the 60's and early 70's. But I always wondered...what happened to all of the monkeys they had at the Mission in Montclair.

Now the old Mission was on the corner of Benson and Holt and right down the street you would find the Valley....Or was it the other way around.

Anyway, it was the Mission that had the Monkeys in long cages against the south fence along holt. A lot of people would get in early just so you could go to the snack bar and buy some popcorn or peanuts just to feed the ugly smelly critters...That is one thing I remember about them....If the Santa Ana's were blowing, the smell was almost enough to make you throw up that Pizza you just bought from the snack bar.

Another argument that prevailed for years, was what city was were the drive in's in. The current location of the Valley would have been county area back then, Montclair and Ontario at that time yet to settle there more periminate boundaries, much of the area was county until the 1980's.

Even today there are those residents of Montclair who insist that both the Valley and Mission were in Montclair. Sorry but it was still county.

Getting back to the monkeys, sometimes parents had to hide there youngsters eyes as monkeys would be monkeys or any other animal for that matter. And that Smell only added to the flavor of the cages. I was glad I didn't have to take care of them or clean out the cages.

The valley was demolished in 1977 to make way for the car dealership that still occupies the site to this day. The Mission on the other hand still survives as one of perhaps 3 others in the Inland Empire.

Today, weekday and weekend yard sales are held with the crowd arriving even earlier than it use to. Since I sold at both the MT Baldy and Mission, I had to be there at 5 in the morning to get a space. If you buy in advance you can arrive as late as 6 without having missed to much of the crowd.

But I never found out what happened to the monkeys that occupied those cages for all those years. Do any of you know?

Tahquitz is the name of the Indian tribe that inhabited the region in the 1700 and 1800's.

The Inn offers one and two bedroom suites, with kitchens and available with fireplaces. In-suite phones, coffee, cable TV, and a heated pool and spa (May-October) are just a few of the amenities that set the Inn apart from other lodges in Idyllwild, all at affordable rates. And they even allow dogs that cant just be separated from their loving masters. You have to bring your own pooper scooper. they don't provide them and they do expect everything to be spotless when you leave.

If you plan on doing a lot cooking, you may wish to bring your own utensils, paper supplies and your own food. They have tried in the past to keep the suite kitchens supplied with the finest in kinvery, but they alwsy seemed to disappear and the cost proved prohitive in resupply.

Otherwise your suite will have everything you need to keep you and your guest comfortable. But if you need something special, like Lobsters, or a special bottle of wine delivered just call them and they will take care of everything.

And leave the kids at home. They don't offer cribs, toys or playthings other than the adult playthings in the suites. This is what they do offer.

Amenities: Hot tub/jacuzzi, Suites available, Children possible, Pets allowed, Designated smoking, No smoking, Gift shop on site, Private porch, Patio, VCR, Fireplace in room, Television in room, Telephone in room, In-room or on-deck coffee/tea service and Guest-accessible kitchen facilities

Sight - Seeing: Historical village/park, Historical site/district, Art galleries and Museum

Other Sports: Bike rentals, Horseback riding and Hunting

Out In The Town: Bars/night clubs, Crafts, Theatre, Shopping district and Antique shops/malls

Out In Nature: Stargazing, Birdwatching, Nature preserves, Parks and Hiking trails

Rides & Tours: City tours and Horse-drawn carriage rides

Idyllwild California is a 2 hour drive from the San Diego Area as well as the Los Angeles area.
From Orange County: Orange County residents have the most choices of routes to get to Idyllwild. There are many routes, but one of the easiest that offers some scenery and not so many curves (before you hit the mountains) is to take the 91 Eastbound to La Sierra. Take La Sierra South until you reach El Sobrante (left at T in road). Take El Sobrante until it ends at the Cajalco Road expressway. (If you miss El Sobrante, keep going since you will run into Cajalco Road). Left on Cajalco Road. It becomes the Ramona Expressway after you cross the 215. Follow this until it ends on Florida (Highway 74 is the main road in Hemet). Make a left. You will now be going toward the mountains on highway 74. Follow 74 until you run into highway 243 toward Idyllwild and Banning which is a left-curving exit on the road. 20 minutes more and you are in town... If you prefer a route with only main highways, take Hwy 60 (which merges with I-10 at Beaumont) or I-10 east to the HWY 243/8th st. exit at Banning, following HWY 243 south up the mountain to Idyllwild.

From Los Angeles County: Again, there are many ways to get there. One is to take the 10 Eastbound. Keep on going until you hit the 8th Street-Highway 243 exit at Banning. Exit South (right) onto 8th Street, following the signs for a left on Lincoln and a right onto San Gorgonio, which is Hwy 243, to Idyllwild. Follow it up the mountain and keep going. You go through Pine Cove and then you will wind up in Idyllwild. You'll see the big green highway sign that says "IDYLLWILD" with the elevation and population, and the Tahquitz Inn will be on your left (east side) in about 150 feet!
If you are coming from Los Angeles and want scenery, you can take the 60 East until you reach Gilman Springs exit and turn right. This will eventually run you into an intersection at Sanderson Road. Turn right. Make a left on Ramona Expressway. Follow this until it ends on Florida (the main road in Hemet). Make a left. You will now be going toward the mountains on highway 74. Follow 74 until you run into highway 243 toward Idyllwild and Banning which is a left-curving exit on the road. 20 minutes more and you are in town... Pass through the center of town, where you will see a two story mall that looks like an old west fort. In about 350 yards, you will find the Tahquitz Inn on the right (east side) of Hwy 243, across from the San Jacinto State Park.

From San Diego County: Take the 15 North to the 215 North. Follow the 215 North until you hit Highway 74 East (Florida Avenue) and go through Hemet (and we mean THROUGH Hemet). Keep on going until you run into highway 243 toward Idyllwild and Banning which is a left-curving exit. Bear to the left on the road to Idyllwild. 20 minutes more and you are in town... As an alternative, you may use Hwy 79 North to Hwy 74 east (Florida Ave. in Hemet), or Hwy 79 South to Hwy 371 north (through Anza) to Hwy 74 west to Mountain Center, where you go north on Hwy 243 into Idyllwild. The Tahquitz Inn is on the north end of Idyllwild, across from the San Jacinto State Park and at the end of the 25MPH speed limit.

To make reservations call

Y not try the Y not Tavern....

Next time you find your self out in the Perris Valley working or visiting friends or just sight seeing Y not try stopping by the Y Not Tavern located on 41 south D St located on the west side of town over by the CDF Fire Command Center.

A small unassuming location just south of the Perris Manson and CDF center it is a nice neighbor hood eatery, with very good and friendly service.

As soon as you enter the door you are greeted by a friendly Hostess who will ask if you prefer a table or table or you can just browse around and find your own seat. Works both ways.

they have a light grill, meaning they serve a variety of easy to cook foods, from hamburgers and french fries to sirloin and rib eye steaks, salads, soups and a full compliment of beers, even some local favorites are on tap.

For about 10 bucks you can sit and enjoy the scenery or on Saturday nights arrive with a date or find a local and dance to jukebox music and the occasional band. During the week they have a piano bar and the music is really quite good.

Even though Perris might be considered out of the way it is only 20 minutes south of Riverside via the 215 freeway. Going south get off at D street and at your first stop sign, with the courthouse on your left, make a right and head west jog around the CDF center and you will find the Y-Not-Tavern.

You can also call ahead at 909-657-4033 and ask to see who the band is and what the house special is. If it is Clam Chowder or Potato Broccoli those are both worth the trip.

Want a quite night for two, snow, bed and breakfast and Mt. life too.....

A friend of mine recently asked me if the old Knickerbocker inn was still open on Big Bear, and I replied , 'call and find out' He did, he went and had a good time and after he got back down the hill he called me to compare notes about the famous Log Cabin Style built Hotel located on the north slope of Fawn Skin.

The Inn was built by a gentleman by the name of william Edwin Knickerbocker. But he preferred the nickname Knick. Knick's birth name was William Edwin Knickerbocker, a name far too fussy for his liking, so he called himself Bill Knick. Knick was born in Pennsylvania in 1869 to a Seneca mother and a Dutch father. And while it might stretch the truth to claim he was born with an axe handle in his hand, this would be a minor exaggeration. In truth, Bill Knick was as much of a natural at chopping down trees as trees are to growing in a forest. He spent his childhood gathering fallen timber from Pennsylvania's forests. And by age twelve he was strong enough to handle an axe and began felling trees on his own. A woodsman from the get-go he grew up with splinters in his hands and sawdust in his blood thus earning him the unoffical title of axman of the Mts.

As a young man he traveled to California, arriving in the San Bernardino region about 1901. having lived almost his entire life living in the forests of the east, he was much Inclined to Big Tree living, so it was natural for Knick to gravitate to the rugged, tree-rich mountain forests of Big Bear Valley where he found a land worthy of calling his home.

Exercising an optimistic approach toward the gold-rich wealth of Holcomb Valley, Knick staked two mining claims. He supported his mining ventures by doing what he did best, working the timber industry felling trees and hauling logs by horse-drawn wagon down the mountain to Banning. In 1904, at age thirty-five, love struck an arrow into Knick and he fell fast and hard into the loving arms of Rose Pollard. They married and settled into a cabin in the nearby town of Doble (Where is Doble?).

Within ten years they had a family of four children and Knick was busy as ever working his mines, cutting timber and fulfilling duties as Big Bear Lake's dam keeper. It was during this time that far-fetched tales about Knick's strength, stamina and skill originated. However, mountain old-timers remember one particular story they swear is true.

It seems that for the sole purpose of developing an appetite, Knick would hike four miles to a ranch store. Once there, he'd catch up on local news before buying a quarter side of beef weighing over a hundred pounds. With a goodbye wave, he hoisted the beef onto his back and carried it home, not stopping once on the trek and never becoming winded from the load.

Now, while this story may leave a smile on the teller's face, the house that Knick built is no doubt a testimony to his remarkable skill.

Built in 1920, on Knickerbocker Road, a stone's throw from Big Bear Village, Knick's historic log mansion stands proudly today as a reminder of the amazing William Edwin Knickerbocker: Big Bear's own Paul Bunyan.

Since the early 1920's, the Knickerbocker Mansion has stood watch over Big Bear Valley from its perch on a hillside just south of the village of Big Bear Lake, California.

Bill Knickerbocker was a huge and hearty man. He worked his way Westward from Pennsylvania in the early 1900's.

Reaching California, he settled in a place called Pine Knot, now known as Big Bear Lake, and became the first damkeeper for the recently completed dam. Knickerbocker searched and finally found a beautiful piece of high ground, where he could overlook the town he loved.

There, along with his wife and five children, he built a magnificent log mansion. An expert axman, Bill Knickerbocker felled the trees for this historic home himself.

The outside of the mansion is constructed from halved logs that were installed vertically for the siding. The house is built of all natural materials with extensive pine and cedar paneling throughout and is home to two huge native-stone fireplaces. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, the Knickerbocker Mansion ensures serenity, not only because of its charm and beauty, but also its location. This three story log mansion sits majestically on two and a half acres of land above Big Bear Lake and backs up to the San Bernardino National Forest. The village, with its restaurants, shops, and theater is only three blocks away.

Knickerbocker guests are welcome to share in the warmth and fun atmosphere of the living room of the main house. Enjoy the extensive library, games and jigsaw puzzles, or relax on one of two covered verandas with forest and lake views. Outside activities include croquet on the lawn, a hike through the forest, or an afternoon nap in a hammock for two.

A wooden staircase, made of 13 half logs, leads you to the second floor where there are four spacious guest rooms decorated to perfection and all with private baths. Antiques and fresh flowers accent each room along with the modern conveniences of TV/VCR and telephones. The aroma of freshly baked breads and muffins waft tantalizingly upstairs as a morning wake-up call to breakfast. Refreshments are served throughout the day. Guests may select from freshly ground coffees or a variety of teas, plus home-baked cookies and pastries. All are prepared with the finest ingredients. The Staff specilizes in creating special backpacks and picnic baskets for hiking, sailing, Alpine or Nordic skiing, or a romantic stroll.

A bullet graze inside the kitchen door frame (one of a series of bullets fired during a boisterous card game) gives evidence to some of the colorful history of the Knickerbocker Mansion.

The Carriage House is located 150 feet from the main house. This secluded house has four cozy rooms on the top floor with private entrances, gas log fireplaces, full baths, TV/VCR and telephones.

Located on the first floor of the Carriage House, the luxury suite has a king size bed in a "sleeping nook", with an expansive great room featuring a wood burning fireplace, dining/game table, private phone, TV/VCR, stereo and coffee bar. In the recently remodled marble bath is an oversize spa/tub and seperate shower.

A wrap-around deck allows you tranquil views of the forest and lake and an occasional visit from one of the "furry and friendly local residents".

The Knickerbocker Mansion is the perfect location for special events such as weddings, corporate retreats and incentive packages. Ask about their group rates and catering prices.

Mexico Lindo & Seafood Restaurant

One of those places the locals all know about and want to keep to themselves, is known as the Mexico Lindo Restaurant located on the way down from the slopes above town just before you get to the main Highway leading back down to Highway 138.

As of February the Mexico Lindo still retained its 4 star rating (02/05/2008) and even though it has been a few years since I and my friends ate there, a friend of mine who was on the MT skiing assured recently, me that the restaurant was still as spicy and hot as ever and he was just talking about the ski bunnies.

Open late, hot soup and spicy salsa after a long night at Mountain High. They usually close around 9:30/10:00 at night after opening late in the morning, unless it is really slow when all of the snow is gone from the MT's. So.. it is a great place to eat at after nightboarding/skiing at mountain high. (food is just tastier after mountain-fun). Mexico-lindo is just down the street from the resort, the food is served piping hot, and they are so friendly here. I always help myself to a bowl of soup and lots of chips.. mmm.

For those of you who like your fajitas hot and juicy and a meal that will fill you up after a long day on the slopes, these are what you what. The meat is surprisingly tender (even the chicken), the onions and bell peppers perfectly caramelized. I had so much on my plate that I was able to take the leftovers home and share them.

They only have a few sea food dishes, but the Lobster theramdor and the shrimp scampy are served piping hot and absolutely delicious....The beef tenderloin and the rib eye are Prime cut and fantastic.

They also carry a full menu of deserts and beers, many foreign, but I found the Miller went down quite well with the steak I had.

The Restaurant is located at

1253 Evergreen Rd
Wrightwood, CA 92397

(760) 249-4100

On a dark MT after a day of playing in the snow or skiing is the one place you would not expect to find. And when the snow is falling hard, a hot cup of hot chocolate goes well with the brisk MT air. Enjoy

Magic Nights at the Magic Lamp Inn

Located almost directly across the street from the Sycamore Inn is the Magic Lamp Inn, currently celebrating its 50th year of Excellent service to the residents of Upland and Cucamonga and all of the Inland Empire.....For years, it seemed that we had three of the best Restaurants were here in Cucamonga and there was quite literally nothing else.

Back in the 60's and 70's before the building boom started out here, there were only about 3500 residents living in the Cucamonga Area....We always use to joke that most of those residents were all related to us....Of course that wasn't the case but it sure seemed like it.

Getting back to my story, there weren't many other places to eat out here aside from Bobs Big Boy up on 19th and Carnelian.....When I first started going to the Magic Lamp when I was a kid we all wore suit and tie, and if you were a women it was your Sunday best, because back then, it was expected....The Magic Lamp was special....We like to think it still is, except that now, causal dress is more the norm during the evenings unless there is a special event taking place....And at the Magic Lamp, special events are the norm rather than the unusual.

The Magic Lamp has four distinct room for those special events seating 5 to 100 people.....The Cucamonga Room seats over 100 people....The Wine Cellar, which has a giant wine cask on one wall and a bar on the other side also seats 100 people....The Foothill Room is one of the smaller rooms that pays homage to Route 66 in pictures...It is just the right size room for a small business affair...It seats 35 people.

The Magic Lamp people specialize in providing the best service for any event you might wish to have....From Wedding Receptions to Square Dancing, they have planned for all possiblities.

The management team at the Magic Lamp also make's sure your night time activities are taken care of as well....The Bar and Lounge is open Friday and Saturday for a Food and Drink fest beginning at 8:30 till closing time at 2: am....They offer a complete menu of O'houres Devours such as Crispy Artichoke Hearts, Sizzling Shrimp Scampi, Hot Cheese Toast which I personally recommend, Crab Cakes & Corn Relish, Chilled Shrimp Cocktail, Potato Skins, Spicy Chicken Wings, Fruit & Cheese Plate, Sautéed Mushrooms and a fantastic tasting Popcorn Shrimp.

Then comes the second menu consisting of Magic Lamp Burger, 8 oz. Prime Rib Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, a classic French Dip Roast Beef with beef aujuice with fried onions, a Classic Reuben with French wine mustard and long dill slices and my favorite the ultimate Caesar Salad with Cheese Toast which is a meal in itself......There is a two drink minimum, but you can spend all night here in the Bar just listening to good live music, eating and sipping your favorite brandy or a bottle of excellent wine.

And did I mention the dancing....On Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday you can dance to the soft tunes of Phill and Scott beginning at 8:30 pm till the Bar closes in the early AM.

The Magic Lamp is open during the following hours;

Luncheon Tuesday - Friday 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM

Dinner Tuesday - Sunday from 5:00 PM

Happy Hour Tuesday - Friday 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM

Karaoke Tuesday from 8:30 PM

Dancing Wednesday - Saturday 8:30 PM

Yes, Virginia, The Sycamore Inn does have a Night Life, and a Sunday Brunch too.

I have written about the History of the Sycamore Inn but never about the Inn itself, the fantastic food and special events that make the Sycamore Inn the most unique restaurant venue in the Inland Empire.

For instance, the Inn is open on Thanksgiving day for a traditional Thanksgiving Meal with all the trimmings, live entertainment, and reservations are a must....The menu is fresh Diestel Free Range Turkey, with Cesar salad or minestronie soup, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, candied yams, cranberry relish and pumpkin pie.....They start serving at 11: am, and as I mentioned, reservations are a must..... Also featured is Filet Mignon, Prime Rib and Fresh Salmon......I would call now (Oct) now for reservations!

But coming up this month on Halloween night, is the famous Halloween Mystery Murder Night....Seating starts at 6:pm and the show and dinner start at 7.....The menu is a secret, and the cost is $50.00 per person....Make reservations early because this event always sells out.

The Inn also has a Prime Time Wine Bar that is open from 5 to 7: pm....They have live music visa a piano singer and later on dancing has been known to occur if the crowd so demands, which seems to be every night thru the week.

The Inn has several rooms that can be reserved for any type of event....The Grand Porch of the Sycamore Inn provides a view of historic Route 66 and the old Sycamore Grove.....A lot of this grove will be lost due to development in the next few months.....But The Porch provides a perfect place to wait for friends, have drinks, or just to reflect on the rich history of "Bear Gulch" which surrounds the Inn.

As you enter the Sycamore Inn you first come thru the Fireplace Lounge....The entry to the Inn provides a warm and rich setting for enjoying drinks with friends or dining by the rustic original rock fireplace.....This is where the Piano Bar is located so don't be surprised if you are a serenaded by the classic vocals of the live entertainment for that night.

The Main Dining Room.....The elegance of the original dining room has been enhanced by remodeling completed in 2002 by the new owners.....They retained the Inn's favored high-backed chairs and long tables so you can relax with drinks while you wait for your food to arrive.

The Cucamonga Room is located off of the Main Dining Room.....This room features historic photos of the "Glory Days" of the old Cucamonga wine district....This is a cozy little room with a fireplace for those nights that the winter chill sets in and is just right for small groups up to 25 people.

The Flower Room offers a special elegance for private meetings, cocktail parties, special family events, or any occasion that requires an intimate ambiance......Gilded mirrors, chandeliers and lace curtains grace this lovely room.....This is one of the nicest special rooms I have ever seen in any restaurant setting.....The Sycamore Inn makes sure your every whim is catered to with over 5 waitresses and waiters who are at your every beck and call....The Flower Room seats up to 30 guests.

The Venetian Room Comes in a close second to the Flower room......The gracious ambiance of old Venice lends a special touch to any event in this room........The focal point of the room is the magnificent Murano glass chandelier, imported from Venice that graces this rich, elegant room.........Antique mirrors, elegantly upholstered chairs, and old paintings add to the richness of this special dining ambiance.......This lovely room, seating up to 40 guests, is a perfect setting for wedding rehearsal dinners, small wedding receptions, anniversary parties, or any party where the guests request a special ambiance..

The Grove Room is located on the Inn's lower level, the Grove Room provides a separate entrance, convenient parking and restrooms, and can accommodate up to 100 guests for a seated dinner or reception......A rustic stone fireplace and full-service bar are special features......The Grove Room is also a perfect place for stand-up cocktail parties and meetings of up to 120 guests.....We ate Thanksgiving dinner several times in this room, and I think we ate here several times for family gatherings during the Sunday Brunch.....Back then it was about $25.00 per person and was quite a feast to be hold and very good.

The Board Room, with its own exterior entrance and private bar, is the perfect locale for meetings, small business events, and private dinners..........The Board Room can accommodate up to 20 guests.

New Owners Chuck and Linda Keagle, long-time Inland Empire owners, have repaired, relandscaped, and updated the majestic old building seeking out old photos from local residents, libraries and other sources......Continuing the long tradition of hospitality and good food, excellent service, and a welcoming ambiance, the new Sycamore Inn honors its roots and begins building new traditions.

If you have never thought of the Sycamore Inn as a night spot, and you are looking for a place that has fine 5 star meals, a rich community history and is both relaxing and enjoyable, I suggest your visit the Sycamore Inn....One of the few truly great restaurants of the Inland Empire.

THE RAXX IS BBQ KING IN RIVERSIDE.

The RAXX BBQ in Down Town riverside is one of those places that succeeds by word of mouth, and its success is worthy of what is said about the food and beer here.

The RAXX is not to far from where the company i worked for had it's office, so when ever I had the time I would pop on down to the RAXX for a Sandwich Dinner and if it was near dinner time I would grab two takeouts for home.

The owners of RAXX have a big sign on there wall that you can see from the outside of the building or as you walk in thru the front door...Of course if the smell doesn't bring you in, your nose must be plugged....Anyway this signs says it all about the overall World View of the RAXX.....Rub It, Heat It, Slap It, Eat It.....The first time I saw this sign I had to ask the waitress what in the world that meant....Rub it refers to the way the secret spices are rubbed onto the meat....Heat it means at least 18 hours in the BBQ slow cooking over oak and white wood.....Slap it refers to the wet rub they put on the meat as it nears perfection....Eat it....Well, I got that real fast....If you on the otherhand, have to be told what that means, you can leave now.

The RAXX is Southern Styled BBQ.....They deliver two combinations that go to together naturally....Great BBQ and Homemade Brewed Beers....They have a dark ale colored beer that has a sweet beginning and a tart ending if you understand my meaning....It is really one of the best home brews I have tasted in a long time.

The RAXX is based on 1940 and 1950 Southern Style Atmosphere with a strong New Orleans Blues and Jazz influence.....In fact, on Friday and Saturday, The RAXX features some of the best Blues and Jazz artists now playing in the Inland Empire.....They even have a Karaoke Night devoted to Blues and Jazz....So bring your best southern voice if you plan on Serenading the crowd.

The last time I was there I had the Smoked Brisket Sandwich....The Brisket is smoked for over 12 hours.....They trim off the fat, toss the meat on a hot grill and soon as it is seared, they chopped the meat up real fine, and serve it with Cole Slaw and BBQ Beans.....I have also had the RAXX House Feast which is a St Louis slab of Pork Ribs that simply fall off of the bone when you pick the up....And the Honey Cornbread that comes with the meal served with lots of butter and real Maple syrup....What a meal....Oh did I tell you this place was messy eating....They do provide plenty of napkins....I guess they know from past experience how messy some of their guest get.

They do offer Catering....I would call them to check on prices....And they will smoke Home Kill...Meaning if you have a pig, or quarter ham or side of beef that needs there magic touch, they can make arrangements for that as well....Please call 951-784-2739 or you can FAX them at 951-784-3524.

All I say is if you find yourself Hungary for some great BBQ and you are in the Riverside Area, try the RAXX....They just might have a RACK of tender tasting fall off the bone meat just waiting for you.

The RAXX is open Sunday thru Thursday, 11: am to 9:pm and Friday and Saturday, 11: am to 10: pm....
