A friend of mine recently asked me if the old Knickerbocker inn was still open on Big Bear, and I replied , 'call and find out' He did, he went and had a good time and after he got back down the hill he called me to compare notes about the famous Log Cabin Style built Hotel located on the north slope of Fawn Skin. The Inn was built by a gentleman by the name of william Edwin Knickerbocker. But he preferred the nickname Knick. Knick's birth name was William Edwin Knickerbocker, a name far too fussy for his liking, so he called himself Bill Knick. Knick was born in Pennsylvania in 1869 to a Seneca mother and a Dutch father. And while it might stretch the truth to claim he was born with an axe handle in his hand, this would be a minor exaggeration. In truth, Bill Knick was as much of a natural at chopping down trees as trees are to growing in a forest. He spent his childhood gathering fallen timber from Pennsylvania's forests. And by age twelve he was strong enough to handle an axe and began felling trees on his own. A woodsman from the get-go he grew up with splinters in his hands and sawdust in his blood thus earning him the unoffical title of axman of the Mts. As a young man he traveled to California, arriving in the San Bernardino region about 1901. having lived almost his entire life living in the forests of the east, he was much Inclined to Big Tree living, so it was natural for Knick to gravitate to the rugged, tree-rich mountain forests of Big Bear Valley where he found a land worthy of calling his home. Exercising an optimistic approach toward the gold-rich wealth of Holcomb Valley, Knick staked two mining claims. He supported his mining ventures by doing what he did best, working the timber industry felling trees and hauling logs by horse-drawn wagon down the mountain to Banning. In 1904, at age thirty-five, love struck an arrow into Knick and he fell fast and hard into the loving arms of Rose Pollard. They married and settled into a cabin in the nearby town of Doble (Where is Doble?).
Mexico Lindo & Seafood Restaurant
Submitted by Ghostpainter on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 10:23pm
One of those places the locals all know about and want to keep to themselves, is known as the Mexico Lindo Restaurant located on the way down from the slopes above town just before you get to the main Highway leading back down to Highway 138.
As of February the Mexico Lindo still retained its 4 star rating (02/05/2008) and even though it has been a few years since I and my friends ate there, a friend of mine who was on the MT skiing assured recently, me that the restaurant was still as spicy and hot as ever and he was just talking about the ski bunnies.
Open late, hot soup and spicy salsa after a long night at Mountain High. They usually close around 9:30/10:00 at night after opening late in the morning, unless it is really slow when all of the snow is gone from the MT's. So.. it is a great place to eat at after nightboarding/skiing at mountain high. (food is just tastier after mountain-fun). Mexico-lindo is just down the street from the resort, the food is served piping hot, and they are so friendly here. I always help myself to a bowl of soup and lots of chips.. mmm.
For those of you who like your fajitas hot and juicy and a meal that will fill you up after a long day on the slopes, these are what you what. The meat is surprisingly tender (even the chicken), the onions and bell peppers perfectly caramelized. I had so much on my plate that I was able to take the leftovers home and share them.

Magic Nights at the Magic Lamp Inn
Submitted by Ghostpainter on Mon, 10/15/2007 - 9:06pm
Located almost directly across the street from the Sycamore Inn is the Magic Lamp Inn, currently celebrating its 50th year of Excellent service to the residents of Upland and Cucamonga and all of the Inland Empire.....For years, it seemed that we had three of the best Restaurants were here in Cucamonga and there was quite literally nothing else. Back in the 60's and 70's before the building boom started out here, there were only about 3500 residents living in the Cucamonga Area....We always use to joke that most of those residents were all related to us....Of course that wasn't the case but it sure seemed like it. Getting back to my story, there weren't many other places to eat out here aside from Bobs Big Boy up on 19th and Carnelian.....When I first started going to the Magic Lamp when I was a kid we all wore suit and tie, and if you were a women it was your Sunday best, because back then, it was expected....The Magic Lamp was special....We like to think it still is, except that now, causal dress is more the norm during the evenings unless there is a special event taking place....And at the Magic Lamp, special events are the norm rather than the unusual.
Yes, Virginia, The Sycamore Inn does have a Night Life, and a Sunday Brunch too.

I have written about the History of the Sycamore Inn but never about the Inn itself, the fantastic food and special events that make the Sycamore Inn the most unique restaurant venue in the Inland Empire.
For instance, the Inn is open on Thanksgiving day for a traditional Thanksgiving Meal with all the trimmings, live entertainment, and reservations are a must....The menu is fresh Diestel Free Range Turkey, with Cesar salad or minestronie soup, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, candied yams, cranberry relish and pumpkin pie.....They start serving at 11: am, and as I mentioned, reservations are a must..... Also featured is Filet Mignon, Prime Rib and Fresh Salmon......I would call now (Oct) now for reservations!
THE RAXX IS BBQ KING IN RIVERSIDE.
Submitted by Ghostpainter on Fri, 10/12/2007 - 12:36pm
The RAXX BBQ in Down Town riverside is one of those places that succeeds by word of mouth, and its success is worthy of what is said about the food and beer here.
The RAXX is not to far from where the company i worked for had it's office, so when ever I had the time I would pop on down to the RAXX for a Sandwich Dinner and if it was near dinner time I would grab two takeouts for home.
The owners of RAXX have a big sign on there wall that you can see from the outside of the building or as you walk in thru the front door...Of course if the smell doesn't bring you in, your nose must be plugged....Anyway this signs says it all about the overall World View of the RAXX.....Rub It, Heat It, Slap It, Eat It.....The first time I saw this sign I had to ask the waitress what in the world that meant....Rub it refers to the way the secret spices are rubbed onto the meat....Heat it means at least 18 hours in the BBQ slow cooking over oak and white wood.....Slap it refers to the wet rub they put on the meat as it nears perfection....Eat it....Well, I got that real fast....If you on the otherhand, have to be told what that means, you can leave now.
