For years all we had in the local area for good restaurants were of course the best of the best. The Magic Lamp, Sycamore Inn, The Cask-N-Cleaver but we had to go to Upland and Ontario to find other places to eat. Remember the Grinder on Foothill, Taco King which is still there and we still make a special trip just for there tacos. Then There was and still is Mi Taco, the Original, on 7th and Mountain Ave just north of the freeway. You can still get two of the best taco burgers with dill pickle and Thousand Island Dressing. To die for I tell ya. I have friends who live over in that area and they will occasionally stop by on there way here and buy a dozen or so, after all you can still after 45 years get two for one price.
Then there was Whinchells donuts on Foothill and San Antonio. It was for years the only donut shop around and it was the best. In Ontario, there was a little place on Holt Called the Real McCoy Hamburgers. I knew the owner because he was my boss when I delivered the old Mirror News as a lad of 10. they had the best hamburgers around and the longest fries. When I got my first check I asked my mom and dad to take me there and i treated the whole family to chocolate Malts, Hamburgers and fries. Cost me about $5 bucks. Ah such memories.
Now adays of course we have so many choices. At the Border on Foothill almost takes the place of Ramón's, but more expensive, then there is Chilies, there Chicken Fried steak is very good, Mimi's across the street and Applebee's. And of course Boston Market, Panda Express and several others line Foothill all the way to the Foothill freeway.
But 20 years ago, none of these restaurants existed. Oh we had Bobs Big Boy up on 19th and Carnelian and KFC and of course the previously mentioned Donahoo's. Anyone remember the Grinder Haven down on Holt and San Antonio, or Sandy's.
Go back in time to 40 years ago. There was nothing past Archibald except Chaffey College. Not till you got to Fontana did you find anything to eat. But that's for another time. Its time for my breakfast.
