Re: Wyatt Earp's home in Colton
I think that must have been not far from what is now the Redlands airport, which is on the edge of the Santa Ana River (dry most of the time). I had heard before that the Earps family had land there, but it looks like it was Ally's parents. It is about 10 miles from Colton. Before Wyatt went to Arizona, he rode shot-gun on the Butterfield stage line between San Bernardino and Beaumont. The line went through San Timoteo Canyon, and this was an area where outlaws were known to live. In the 1960s, an old timer wrote that he remembered Jessie James living in San Timoteo Canyon at one time. I don't know if that is true, but it is true that the Canyon was not safe for the stage coach to travel through it without an armed guard. There's a plaque near Fisherman's Retreat in the Canyon which speaks about the Stage line and the fact that Wayatt was sometimes a guard on it.
